BTP takes trespassing very seriously and trespassing onto private property or the railway without permission is a criminal offence, which can lead to a fine of up to £1,000.  In tackling trespass, BTP officers and rail staff can be put in dangerous situations, as trains will still be running and lines live with electricity.

Most cases of trespass on the railway are committed by people who are taking a shortcut, but sadly these offences can often have deadly consequences. Always follow the advice of warning signs and stay away from railway tracks, even long after the trains have stopped running, the lines are still be live with a lethal amount of electricity.
