Anti-social behaviour

Anti-social behaviour in railway stations, near railway tracks and on trains is a major issue that British Transport Police tackles using a variety of surveillance methods and by working in partnership with other police forces, local authorities and local communities.

British Transport Police officers carry out regular patrols of stations and hot spot railway track locations. They carry out these patrols on foot as well as using off road vehicles, motor bikes and in some cases helicopters that are in contact with ground patrols.

They are supported by a network of CCTV cameras on stations, trackside and on an increasing number of trains. The quality of digital CCTV images is now so good that images of children and adults carrying out acts of anti-social behaviour and crime are released to the public to help with investigations and they are also used in court to support prosecutions.

Because anti-social behaviour is a community wide issue that doesn’t just occur on the railway network, British Transport Police works very closely with many partners. An example of such collaborative working was an Action Day held in Micklefield, near Leeds.
