Neighbourhood Policing
British Transport Police's neighbourhood policing initiative, 'Safer station, safer journey', aims to reduce crime and the fear of crime by creating high visibility, proactive policing teams in key neighbourhoods. The aim is to engage with local people and communities to identify and tackle local crime and disorder issues.

Neighbourhood Policing Teams in the North

British Transport Police (BTP) in the North of England is extending the coverage of its Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) in the region. We have teams that are dedicated to policing train services and stations in the areas they serve and engaging with commuters, retail operators and licensees identifying concerns and local policing priorities. We are also working closely with Northern Rail in promoting NorthernTraX and NorthernArt, their established arts-based diversionary initiatives for young people.

Manchester NPT has also been instrumental in the launch of the new 'Campuswatch' initiative at Salford University where student and staff volunteers act as the campus' eyes and ears alerting security or police to anything suspicious at Salford train station.

The Southport to Liverpool Neighbourhood Policing Team consults extensively with the communities along the Southport to Sandhills line, incorporating 15 stations. Sergeant Jayne Lewis who is in charge of the team says. “We have been making a real effort to listern to the concerns of local people and then find practical solutions to tackle these concerns. For example, over the christmas period, passengers informed us of concerns regarding anti social behaviour on the late-night trains. To address this we conducted late night train patrols on a number of different trains each weekend in the run up to Christmas. This resulted in a number of arrests and reassured passengers."

Inspector Brian Buddo is responsible for managing BTP's Neighbourhood Policing teams across West Yorkshire. He says. "We launched NPTs in Leeds and Bradford in 2006. In the short time they have been operational they have proved a huge success reducing incidents and making people feel safer when using the railway network."
