Drax Power Station was built in two stages the first stage was completed in 1974 and the second in 1986.

Drax is the newest, largest and most efficient coal-fired power station in the UK. It’s also the cleanest coal-fired power station in the UK as it has flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment which removes at least 90% of the sulphur dioxide from the flue gases and has recently retrofitted technology to reduce its emissions of nitrogen oxides.

We are also reducing our carbon footprint by burning

renewable biomass materials with coal. 2,000,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide will be saved each year by burning biomass materials such as wood based products, willow and elephant grass with our main fuel, coal.

Each of the six electricity production units has a capacity of 660MW, giving a total capacity of just under 4,000MW enough to meet 7% of the country’s electricity demand.

Drax power station is owned and operated by Drax Power Limited, the operating subsidiary of Drax Group plc, a company listed on the London Stock Exchange.
