Northern Rail support for grass roots rugby league
A 3-year initiative to encourage the recruitment and retention of teenagers into grass roots Rugby League will enable over 20,000 more young players to make the crucial link from schools to clubs.

The project has been made possible with the support of Northern Rail's sponsorship of the Northern Rail Cup via a maximum government-backed Sportsmatch award.

The initiative aims to support and enhance the British Amateur Rugby League Association's National Youth Cups at under 14's, Under 16's and Under 18 age groups for boys and girls. School-to-club links are also being strengthened in key areas and educational opportunities created aimed at encouraging young people to stay in the sport as officials and coaches.

All the activity is being delivered by RFL Development staff throughout England in partnership with clubs and local authorities.

This exciting partnership fulfils one of Northern Rail's key community objectives by providing opportunities for young people to stay active and healthy. An important part of the railway safety education programme is supporting diversionary activities and playing rugby league certainly helps to achieve that goal.
