Serco – improving public transport
Public transport is becoming more and more important as the price of fuel and environmental charges makes cars more and more expensive to run.
In partnership with government agencies, a variety of companies and several public organisations, we help run trains and buses in many parts of the UK, as well as provide and operate high-tech road management systems.
Railways
Serco in partnership with Dutch train operator NedRailways operates two train companies:
Merseyrail is a 75 mile urban rail for Liverpool and the rest of Merseyside.
Northern Rail is the largest community rail operator in the UK providing train services across the North of England
Serco has also operated and maintained the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in East London since 1997. The driverless system DLR is one of the most successful railways in the world delivering sustained high levels of punctuality, reliability, safety and security, winning an unprecedented number of industry awards.

Buses
Serco provides bus operations and systems in different parts of the UK
We provide specialised transport for special educational needs pupils and Social Services staff in Bradford to schools, hospitals and care centres.
We manage the bus fleet system for Glasgow City Council
We provide our real time passenger information system for major cities including Birmingham, Coventry and Sheffield
Road traffic systems
We are one of the leading developers of traffic management, operation and information systems in the UK.

We have been commissioned by The Highways Agency to implement and operate a £160 million National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC). The NTCC collects and manages extensive traffic information on 6,500km of England’s core road network. Detailed responses to the roads conditions are provided and continually monitored and analysed in order to better manage the network during incident conditions.
